SC Seeks Status Report from Tamil Nadu on the Issue of the Spread of COVID-19 in Children’s Shelter Homes in Chennai

The Supreme Court has sought a status report from Tamil Nadu after seeing the media reports of 35 children being infected with the COVID-19 in Chennai’s shelter home. The Bench of Justices L Nageswara Rao, Krishna Murari and S Ravindra Bhat has asked the state of Tamil Nadu to give a report on measures being taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in children’s homes.

The Court has said that it appears that children were affected as the warden of the shelter had contracted the virus. The Court has further said that a questionnaire prepared by Justice Bhat would be given to all the Juvenile Justice Committees manned by respective State Governments across the country. The objective of this questionnaire is to check that whether the states have implemented the directions passed by the Court which was ordered on April 3, 2020 in relation to preventing the spread of COVID-19 in children’s homes.

The Court in its order had passed directions for Child Welfare Committees (CWCs), laid down measures to be taken by Juvenile Justice Boards (JJBs) and Children Courts, measures to be taken by the state governments, Directions to CCIs, among other things.
