A petition has been filed in Supreme Court seeking the implementation of the “One Nation One Ration Card” Scheme during this COVID-19 pandemic.
The plea has been filed in the light of migrant labourers and the poor, who are now in different states or in temporary shelters during the lockdown. The plea requests the court to implement this scheme as soon as possible (which was to be launched in june 2020) as these people are not been getting benefits of schemes of Central Government and State Governments including subsidized food grains, shelter and medical facilities.
The plea further states that a large number of potential beneficiaries of aid, who could not reach their respective home states during the lockdown have been facing hunger as these states are first attending the needs or rather giving preference to its respective citizens and voters.
Thus, the petition states that the Government should be directed to provide food and medical aid to these poor migrants and labourers and the rights of such people should protected under Article 21 of the Indian Constitution.
